Stepping out on the road is its own reward. The fresh air, the accomplishment, knowing you’re making yourself better, and being a part of one of the biggest communities out there. Though now and then we look to give more of ourselves to the world. For most of us that means running in the name of a charity, or the memory of a lost loved one.
My mother was diagnosed with Lymphoma in 2014. I remember I was in the process of moving out-of-state. I almost had a new job setup, had scouted new apartments, and had given my informal notice. Her diagnosis came in time that I could decide to stick around while she battled her illness, which indeed I did. She went through multiple surgeries and treatments over the next year, but ultimately lost her fight a little after a year.
I have been looking at Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training for a while now. However, most of the events listed aren’t very close. For the time being I was simply using the Charity Miles app to raise money for LLS. During my last check for events I noticed that an option existed for simple fundraising for an event of your choice.
This fall I’m taking on the Harvest Half Series. One of the races, Pilgrim Pacer, will take place just two days after my mom’s would be 59th birthday, and 1 week before it’s been 11 years since she passed away. I decided that I will run this race in memory of my mother, Joni.
